This is a rare example of a magnificent Oak in southeast Turkey (probably Quercus brantii, however this species is very similar to Q. ithaburensis and Q. libani so the identification is uncertain). All three species were probably much more widespread in the Near East during the early Holocene but have progressively diminished due to deforestation caused by over-grazing, wildfires and exploitation for fuel and timber. 1990 |
