  This is a rare stand of oak (Quercus brantii) near the village of Akkuyu, 18 kms north of the Syrian border. This region is largely deforested so this isolated stand is exceptional (see menu for satellite images of the area) 2004 Archaeological sites have produced large quantities of oak charcoal in the region indicating that oak forests were far more widespread in the Bronze Age and Neolithic periods
