Rich brown basalt soil near the town of Kobani in northern Syria close to the Turkish frontier. Wild einkorn grows in this region between the cereal fields. This area may have been a source of wild cereals such einkorn and rye for the inhabitants of Neolithic sites such Jerf el Ahmar, Mureybet and Djade. These habitats, which are widespread in the Near East, could potentially lead to gene flow between wild and domestic populations. Ken-ichi Tanno and Ramond Buxo can be seen examining wild einkorn. 2005 |
