There is some confusion with regard to the classification of this Juniperus species sometimes referred as J. polycarpos or J. oxycedrus subsp. macrocarpa or J.seravschanica.These trees have been reported from Tajikistan, Oman and Iran. This photo taken at distance shows isolated examples which grow at over 1800 masl (dark dots) in the mountains above the Shah Maqsud Shrine north east of Kandahar

This example photographed in the narrow valley seen in the left hand photo has been cut for fuel. During the early Holocene these high altitude Junipers probably grew at lower altitudes and were more frequent compared to today's remnants
