Collective work on a large irrigation channel near the site of Shortughai in northern Afghanistan. This channel supplies water for a fertile terrace of the Amou Daria or Oxus river. The Oxus forms the frontier between Tajikistan and Afghanistan. Irrigation of this kind on a large scale requires a high level of cooperation.
